Micro needling - My New Favourite Skin Care Treatment
Those who know me well, know I love to try out the best and latest natural skincare treatments and products. I started going to SKN Clinic not long after I moved to Vancouver almost 2 years ago. I love that SKN has a holistic approach to health and beauty and they sell amazing natural skincare products. A treatment that was recommended to me at SKN was Micro-needling.
I have to say it’s become one of my new favourite treatments so I had to share. If you want smooth, glowing skin, you have to try it! Micro-needling is a safe, and effective option to injectables which gives you lasting results with short recovery time. It’s similar to cosmetic acupuncture but way more effective! The premise of this treatment is using the body’s natural ability to heal wounds. The micro-needling device sort of looks like a big pen and uses microscopic needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. As part of the healing process, the skin will produce collagen and elastin to repair/regenerate the skin.
Microneedling can help with:
Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Acne, chickenpox and surgical scars
Minimize pore size
Pigmentation and sun damage
Tighten the skin
Maximize the absorption of skincare products
The low down…..
I just finished up my 5th treatment a couple of weeks ago, so the results should be seen in about 6 weeks from now. It’s generally recommended to go every 4-6 weeks (every 4 weeks is preferred) for 3-6 treatments in a year. I opted for 5 sessions for anti-aging results and to minimize the prominence of my chickenpox scars. The treatment itself was a bit painful but totally bearable. Most places will also offer a numbing cream that can be applied (usually for an added fee) but I don’t really think it’s necessary (my 2 cents).
Immediately after the treatment my skin was red and looked slightly sunburned so I basically threw on my baseball hat and shades and headed home right after. They generally recommend keeping your skin makeup-free for the remainder of the day so try to book the treatment for a day off or at the end of the day. The 3-4 days following the treatment my skin felt dry and tight so I applied Forget Beauty’s Awakened Hydrating Serum and Forget Beauty's Nutured Replenishing Oil on top, twice a day. These 2 products were amazing and I continue to use the serum daily. I would recommend buying a hyaluronic face mask like the one from Magicstripes ($18 CAD) to apply in the evening on the day of treatment. I put mine in the fridge, so it was incredibly cooling for my face and of course hydrating. I feel like the mask helped speed up the healing from my treatment and decreased the redness the days following the treatment.
My skin was usually red for 1-3 days post-treatment but I was able to cover it up with foundation so it really wasn’t too bad. In the week following the treatment, I also experienced mild peeling so I don’t recommend making any big plans for the first week post-treatment. You should also avoid using an exfoliant during that time. For maintenance and in between treatments I purchased a dermal roller–the Skin Spin Roller System which I use on my face once a week.
It’s not as painful as the treatment and it helps to boost the effects of the micro-needling treatments. The last thing I would say is you really need to be patient to see the results as it takes time for your body to heal/regenerate. It’s slow but effective. I would say it was after the 3rd treatment when I really started to notice a difference. After my fifth treatment the pores on my face have diminished in size, my skin feels tighter and looks brighter. The fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes were significantly reduced and I feel like my skin has an incredible glow now.
