My Top 10 Healthy Travel Picks
March Break is coming up so I thought now would be a good time to share some of my favourite go-to products to pack for travel. Here are my top 10 healthy travel products….
1) S’well water bottle
The goal is to always stay hydrated. Most airports now offer water bottle refill stations so you can fill up before you board the plane and avoid the inflated airport costs for bottled water. The reason I love S’well bottles is because they don’t sweat and they keep your drinks nice and cold for up to 24 hours (they can also keep your tea hot for up to 12 hours). I have the 17oz bottle which is equivalent to about 2 cups of water. Try to aim for at least 10 cups of water per day.
2) Probiotics
I try to minimize the number of supplements I bring with me on vacation as I’m usually only gone a week or two but probiotics are a must. I take probiotics everyday but taking them while travelling is especially important as it means exposure to new and different types of bacteria in the food and water. Probiotics will help keep “good" bacteria in check, to help counteract overgrowth of “bad” bacteria and pathogens. I prefer to bring shelf stable probiotics (vs. those that need refrigeration) to make life easier when travelling. I use either Physica Energetics Flora Syntropy which is one of my favourite supplement lines and one that I sell to my clients or Genuine Health Advanced Gut Health Probiotics. I also recommend Genestra Probiotics if you have a fridge to store them in. For more info on the benefits of probiotics you can check out my blog post here.
3) My Young Living Essential Oils
These are my top 3 for travelling:
Lavender - this is great for sunburn, wounds or skin irritations. Please ensure you are only apply high quality pure lavender oil like Young Living. Many essential oil companies claim to be pure but are not so please do your research. Lavender is also calming (great for the kids!) so I like to put a few drops on the pillows.
Lemon - I add 1-2 drops to my water first thing in the morning when I don’t have access to fresh lemons. You can check out my blog post on the benefits of lemon and water here.
DiGize - Another great support for your gut. This oil is a combination of Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise and Patchouli. Although I don’t love the smell of this combo, I will rub it on my kids tummies to soothe an upset stomach.
4) Healthy Snacks
Airport and plane food is usually overpriced and there are typically a lot of unhealthy options. I usually opt for travel friendly snacks like protein bars and nuts to fuel me up for the journey. Some of my favourite protein bars are RX bars- I like the taste of these and they are a great paleo/Whole 30 option and the GoMacro Macrobar, is my favourite vegan option.
5) Sunscreen
I opt for natural sunscreens like Goddess Garden or Thinksport for my body but I love Coola BB Cream Sunscreen for my face as it gives a matte tint, it blends well and it’s great under make up.
6) Makeup
Ilia Tinted lip conditioner with SPF 15. It’s so moisturizing and a great alternative to those sunscreen lip balms that turn your lips white.
RMS Beauty lip and cheek stain. This is a great multi use product. It gives my cheeks a dewy glow and natural hit of colour for my lips.
7) Skincare
Forget Beauty Awakened. This serum contains hyaluronic acid which is incredibly hydrating for the skin because the plane ride can be drying for the skin. I use this under my daily moisturizer as an extra boost.
8) Activated charcoal
I like the Organika capsules. You can take this if you get indigestion or even food poisoning. Activated charcoal binds to the toxins prevents their absorption in the gut. You should also drink lots of water to help the body remove the toxins. Activated charcoal affects the absorption of supplements and nutrients you may be taking so be mindful of that. It’s intended for short term use. Check with your doctor to ensure there are no contraindications for any pre existing conditions or medications you are taking.
9) Greens Powder
Depending on where you are going it can been harder to stay with your typical diet. I like the sample packs from Genuine Health. They taste great (I love the mango acai flavour) and you can just add it to filtered water and have it first thing in the morning. It’s packed full of phytonutrients so it’s an ideal way to start your day.
10) Homeopathics for motion sickness
Boiron Cocculine is great for both kids and adults to help prevent and alleviate nausea, vomiting, dizziness and it’s ideal for any kind of travel. These tablets are non drowsy and can be taken without water so they are perfect for travelling.
